The Downtown Chatham Centre is locally owned and operated. The mall opened in October 1982 and currently houses over 50 stores & services. The mall is anchored by three national retailers, Sears – 2 level which is (71,903 sq. ft.), Sport Chek (18,234 sq. ft.) and Goodlife Fitness (15,126 sq. ft.). The Downtown Chatham Centre is the only two storey retail mall in the Chatham-Kent area.
The mall has an extensive selection of parking. The parking garage houses 450 stalls, there are 300 stalls on the surface and include expectant mother’s and handicap spots, which are all free.
Some of the services that the Downtown Chatham Centre offers are gift cards, mall security officers, lost & found, complimentary wheelchair, electric scooter, cuddle car strollers, information booth, lottery booth, ATM & postal drop, escalator, conversation/seating areas, cafe style eating area on the main level and hand sanitizers located throughout the property.
The Downtown Chatham Centre is a green shopping centre. In October 2010 the Downtown Chatham Centre was awarded the Waste Minimization Award, from the Recycling Council of Ontario, in recognition of excellence and commitment to a sustainable environment.
One of the most appealing features of the mall is the relaxed atmosphere and various indoor and scenic outdoor seating/conversation areas. Some of the most pristine and well groomed gardens in the downtown area are located inside and outside of the mall. The Downtown Chatham Centre was awarded with a Communities in Bloom Award in 2010.
The Downtown Chatham Centre is very involved in the local community and there are always various community events, entertainment and activities taking place at mall. Various children’s activities & entertainment have visited Downtown Chatham Centre , such as the well known Canadian Treehouse Network’s duo Toopy & Binoo, and are usually offered free of charge. The Downtown Chatham Centre has been the home to the Chatham Mall Walkers for the last 23 years.
